How to get to Pompeii

The easiest way is the Circumvesuviana train from Naples or Sorrento to the station Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri, next to the Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra entrances. The Park lists three entrances; the ticket offices are inside the archaeological area, at the three gates only.

By Circumvesuviana from Naples

Take the EAV line Napoli–Sorrento to Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri. On the timetable in force from 17 October 2026 there is one train every 30 minutes in each direction. From Napoli Porta Nolana the trains leave at 5:30, 6:00, 6:30 and so on until 22:00; they reach Pompei Scavi at :09 and :39 past the hour, so the 6:00 from Porta Nolana arrives at 6:39 (39 minutes). From Napoli Garibaldi, where trains leave 3 minutes later, the trip takes 36 minutes.

Back to Naples, trains leave Pompei Scavi at :05 and :35, from 6:05 to 22:35, and reach Napoli Garibaldi at :43 and :13 and Napoli Porta Nolana at :45 and :15 (the last arrival is at 23:15). The EAV freephone number is 800 211 388.

From Sorrento and from Herculaneum

The same line serves Sorrento: from Pompei Scavi it takes 36 minutes to Sorrento and 35 minutes in the other direction, with trains from Sorrento from 5:30 to 22:00. From Ercolano Scavi it is 21 minutes, with three intermediate stops (Torre del Greco, Torre Annunziata-Oplonti and Villa Regina), so Herculaneum and Pompeii combine well on the same line.

Piazza Anfiteatro and Trenitalia

For the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance the Park suggests the Circumvesuviana line Napoli–Poggiomarino, stop Pompei Santuario; the walking distance to the gate is not given. Trenitalia's Napoli–Salerno line stops at Pompei, and Trenitalia says the Piazza Anfiteatro is about 10 minutes on foot from that station. The Park also cites the “Pompei Link” (train and bus, about 15 minutes to the Park); we could not confirm the frequency or the fare of the bus.

Campania Express

The Campania Express, the EAV tourist train, is reported by the press as suspended from 1 October 2026 until further notice. It had restarted on 28 March 2026 with 8 runs a day (stops at Ercolano, Pompei, Castellammare and Sorrento). EAV's own page was not available to us, so we could not confirm the status or the fare: do not plan around it, and check EAV.

From the airport and the port

We could not confirm an official route from Capodichino airport or from the port of Naples. The usual way is to reach Napoli Garibaldi or Napoli Porta Nolana and take the Circumvesuviana; that is our advice, not an official indication.

By bus and by car

The Park cites SITA buses from Naples and Salerno and Busitalia Campania lines no. 4 and the express no. 50 from Salerno; we could not confirm frequencies. By car, take the A3 Napoli–Salerno motorway and exit at Pompei Scavi.

The Park says there is no car park for visitors. Outside the archaeological area there are many paid municipal car parks, marked by blue lines, and some private ones; we could not confirm their prices.
